First, let's define what a "drug" is: a substance that provides an altered state of mental and/or physical being.
Many people in history have said that attempts at altering the mind are a fourth drive, as basic as hunger, thirst, and shelter.
I'm here to tell you why, who, how, when and what this is all about.
But before I begin, let me tell you "people out there with opinions"; your personal opinions have no relevance in the greater scheme of the facts, also, they have no preeminence or significance over the opinions of others.
Now I'm not here to teach you about drugs or teach you the effects of each one in particular or whatnot, I'm simply here to clear up the blunt smoke fogging many of your perceptions.
Let me get the usual suspects out of the way; if you have ever taken a sip of that ever so poisonous ethanol (alcohol), or taken a toke of that nicotine (along with its 233 chemical partners prevalent in an average cigarette) or even more basic still, taken a sip of that ever so detrimental caffeine: you have no moral, social, intellectual, factual or health-based legitimate voice in opposition to the most basic of herbal remedies: the green.
Now let me go over that last paragraph, for I am definitely not one to oppose the use and abuse of that ever-so poisonous ether almost all of you enjoy (because sometimes it simply gets the job done), I've also been known to hit enough bogies in my time, and I've probably drank more energy drinks and cups of coffee than many of you; but if you saw my last paragraph as an attack against those substances, then you are already lost, because it was simply an expression of the natural beauty of the ever so mystical, herb.
But I digress... Let me continue...
As an interlude, I would like to ask you a question and tell you the main reasons why substance use/abuse exists. Do you agree that life sucks? (If you're some rainbow carebear, at least agree with me that at certain points, life sucks.) But hold that thought, there are 3 main causes for substance use:

1.) Escape from Reality - Pain (i.e. Hitting the herb to forget the trivial complications of day-to-day life.)
2.) Escape from Reality - Boredom (i.e. As simple as the fact that anything that will change the norm will provide you with a new and fulfilling experience.)
3.) Escape from Self (This one is too complex) - (i.e. Drinking to have the balls to chop the females.)
But let me continue...
For you see, there are two basic types of drugs... there are those that give your body an excess of a chemical it naturally produces and processes in order to heighten certain thoughts/feelings or physical sensations, and then there are those that introduce a toxic element to your system and it simply has no choice but to react in an unnatural way, and these in turn give you a feeling you have never felt, or more importantly, should never feel naturally.
A quick short-list of some main contenders in both categories:
Natural: Marijuana (THC), Cocaine (Dopamine), Mushrooms (Psilocybin-Psilocin)
Unnatural: Alcohol (Ethanol), Tobacco (Nicotine), Aspirin (Acetylsalicylic Acid, lawl)
Once again, this is not either an advertisement or an attack against any of these drugs, because obviously, that cocaine powder, is 3rd on the list of most untouchable drugs in the known world, yet every motherfucker and his mom has sipped on the liquid poison (alcohol), and those motherfuckers' uncles have probably hit many-a-nicotine stick, and all of them for sure have popped many-a-pharmaceutical. I'm simply here to inform.
But this is where this post gets real, but before I burst a lot of your bubbles, I have to go through a simple run-through of the effects of Cocaine and it's dirty-dirty cousin, Crack: It is simply a major stimulant in the release of Dopamine, and Crack is simply a more potent (and cheaper) version of this stimulant, which is why it is #1 on the list of untouchable drugs, because once you've hit that Dopamine and enjoyed it to its full extent, nothing else matters.
Let me now go through a quick run through of Dopamine: it is a chemical that your brain creates, and is released through a reward-system of 5 receptor-processes, each doing a specific task... but to break it down for you, it is what creates the feelings of happiness that you so enjoy.
But this is where it gets sad, because sadly, every one of you (us) is a crack-head; for you see, all of your basic needs and wants such as food, water, and sex are simply a drug seeking (pleasure seeking) behaviour, part of a day to day routine that you indulge yourself in on a very regular basis. Every time you're hungrier than a motherfucker and you murder those 28 wings, you're simply a crack-head getting their fix, because if you were smart, you would eat a granola bar and move on with your day, not indulge yourself and introduce the new-spangled chemicals and ridiculous unhealthiness found in regular foods today. Anything from a pizza to a hot dog or fried chicken to diet-coke is chalk-full of unnatural substances from pharmaceuticals to simply unhealthy things such as oil and grease. All you're doing is looking for your Dopamine.
For all you that still think drugs are for the idiot youth, "bad people", or are still in the mind-state that its some next-level criminal activity; I'm trying to tell you that its just another element of life, and you have to know your limits, with anything from eating to drinking to smoking to smoking better stuff, you can be an abuser of anything in life, from watching T.V. to playing online-video-games. If you are someone who is prone to addictive behaviour, it is your problem, not the things around you; because all addictive behaviour is a result of chemical addiction. From Dopamine to Melatonin (a chemical released by your body during awake hours to make you feel drowsy... which is countered by many other chemicals released by your body when you are in a state of sleep, thus reducing your drowsiness.), you are all fiends.
If you're a fatass and like eating, do it up; you're a crackhead.
If you play WoW all day and are lovin' it, do it up; you're a crackhead.
If you like studying all day, and that leaves you feeling fulfilled, you should really do it up; but you're still simply looking for that fulfillment or success later in life or simply the feeling of learning entices you, either way, you're a crackhead.
If you like the feeling of sleeping another 3 hours and waking up later, really do it up; but you're still a crackhead, getting your much needed fix of chemical relief in this day to day struggle we live in.
We're all in the same game, simply because some white-ass old motherfuckers early in the 20th century made everything illegal, and flopped on the alcohol tip, doesn't mean your mind should still be trapped in that mentality. Your views need to change, and you have to realize it's all the same shit, just different (bigger and smaller) piles. I'm just trying to get my fix for today, go get yours; and not simply with drugs but with everything around me, drugs are simply there to enhance the experience of life itself and that's what needs to be understood.
I'm just trying to take a deep breath and enjoy the world... but they just won't let me breathe...

Very well said indeed. Aside from the fact that you've been completely shady, and abandoning me several times in life in the past few weeks.
I must re-iterate on the point that, yes there are people out there with a very traditional mindset thinking: people that "do drugs" are all bad, no-good, degraded youth, yatta yatta....you made the point.
And sadly, even though you make a very good point, the substance users are just a mere pawn of the people who criticize such things. Why? Because these people usually are important, and the ones who decide to "escape from reality" still have to answer to these people. In the end, you get people who are hesitant still in the long run, and not willing to do such things, not because of their own opinions...but because of the opinion of others...a pecking order, someone's boss, someone's family, even others who look down on such things, like, good friends, a girlfriend or boyfriend, etc. etc... So overtime, these people have the same views simply because they cannot afford to jeopardize their reputation with important people who still think of these naturally inducing, chemical releasing substances as something that is at the bottom of this world. That in turn, equates to a domino type effect, a ripple in the water, a chain reaction...however you want to call it.
Sadly, not everyone will agree with you on this post, but it does bring up a lot of GOOD valid points, that hopefully people with a more open mind will keep in mind. Keep it up Babaghanouj.

Quite an interesting take.
I don't know if I readily agree. It's the artificiality of it all. At least when you're being a 'crackhead' in the other senses, it's out of your own powers--and that dopamine is real, it's not constructed or forced.
Not that I'm debating the natural existance of things--because we all know how much we love our air conditioning and plastic.
But I think when it comes to feelings, there's a line to be crossed. And some things just shouldn't be faked.

Excellent! This is beautiful! I'm loving it man. Both dan and sir roach bring out the most valid and true points. However, it's psylocybin. Psylocin is found in some mushrooms only and is just a subform of psylocybin ;p
Love y'all!

btw doesn't your last name mean 'the one well-versed in the ways of altering the mind?' lol

@Goreface69: Psilocybin is metabolized into Psilocin, which is the main hallucinogen. And I edited the post to reflect this, thank you for pointing it out.
@Everyone else: Thank you for reading and taking the time to comment. I appreciate your appreciation.

Man Google's trying to stealth Facebook's territory.. wth is 'Google Friends' Connect'?
Anyway, onto more related comments:
The Drug War, like all other pointless wars is all about job creation. It creates a need for cops, pushers and journalists reporting on the two fighting each other. (which goes on to generate more dispensable income for more people to buy SUVs, etc.).
The reason why street drugs (as opposed to prescription and pharmaceutical drugs which are a whole different racket) are viewed in such a bad light is because it leads to othering, which is essential if one wants to keep a war against one's own people going. It also feeds misinformation.
..I'll accept 'Escape from reality', maybe, but to 'Escape from Self', I'd respond that better course of action would be growing some balls.. (at least in the case of the given example).
You'll like the movie 'Layer Cake'. If you haven't already seen it, here's the opening monologue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHKI8zMHCjE
